This past weekend saw our beloved Javelina baseball team go to battle with the no. 13 ranked Southern Arkansas Muleriders. To much of our surprise the Javelinas dropped all three games and where swept at Nolan Ryan Field, something that very rarely happens since head coach Jason Gonzales took the helm.
The Javelinas now sit at 2-3 on this young season with a double header against the University of Houston-Victoria coming up tomorrow night in Victoria, TX.
I know for a fact that this team will use this lesson vs. Southern Arkansas to propel themselves forward in the season with the Lone Star Conference games meaning the most in the regular season.
This ballclub could have scheduled anybody this past weekend instead of the visiting Muleriders. They could have padded their win total with a much lesser opponent, instead they decided to challenge themselves with a top 15 quality opponent.
Despite the fact that didn’t win a game against Southern Arkansas, the team will learn from this series and take the experience of playing a good team and use
that for when they have those LSC series against the likes of Angelo State and Tarleton State, both of those teams are expected to challenge the Javelinas for the LSC regular season crown and the LSC tournament title.
The beginning of the season for any sport is about developing that camaraderie and finding yourself as a team. Despite this team having 15 seniors return from last years squad a lot of the younger players are getting significant playing time. Guys like David Massey, Cline Andrews, Blake Johnson and Carl Huizar are all getting valuable reps and can help this team as the season continues forward.
The bottom line this week is don’t panic about the Javelina baseball team and the losses they had this week. For as long as I’ve been alive, championships are not won in early February they are built in the early season and won in late May and early June.
No worries this team will get back on track and will put this past weekend behind them. That’s what has to be done, cant let this past weekend linger like a couple teenagers hanging outside a stop and shop.
When it’s all said and done this weekend will be forgotten and the season will march on. The Javelinas have the experience to get themselves over this and continue that march to the LSC title.
So don’t sweat it Javelina Nation, unless its late May and the title is on the line is when you should be panicking. Till then just sit back and relax and enjoy these guys playing America’s favorite pastime.
