Hogs own the Night: Hosting Javelinas shine at Invitational

The Hogs took advantage of their home track and field and set new national records at the Inaugural Javelina Twilight Invitational last Saturday.

The Javelinas were victorious, having the top 10 finishers of the evening in both the men and women competitors.

Jeron Robinson, currently leading the NCAA Division II in high jumps, topped his own record by clearing 7 feet 5 inches, over two inches higher than the previous feat. With the jump, Robinson stays ahead of the rest of the nation in high jumps by 2 ½ inches.

Samantha Alvarez also had a good showing, reaching her season-best in the high jump after clearing 5 feet 7 inches. Alvarez also took first in the pole vaulting and javelin competitions, setting new Lone Star Conference (LSC) records.

Although national champion pole vaulter Jordan Yamoah did not top his own record at the invitational, he still took first place, clearing 16 feet, 8 inches to take the gold.

Other winners in the field events included Tyler Chovanec, who took first place with a distance of 48 meters and Amanda Haven, who was victorious in the long jump.

The Javelinas also ran up their award count with the track portion of the competition. Amber Perry took the gold in the 400 meter race with a time of 56.12 seconds.

Sprinter Corbin Whalum clocked in a personal best 21.85 seconds to take first in the 200 meter race. Whalum also was first in the 100 meter race with a time of 10.94 seconds.

The other competing schools at the meet included University of Texas-Pan America and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The Javelinas will compete again next Saturday at Rice University for their own twilight meet.
