Javelina Athletics Hosts 4th Annual Hoggie Hunt

Eggs of varying colors are sprinkled across the turf, blue end zone to blue end zone.

The children wait eagerly at the edge of the field gripping the handles of their Easter baskets, waiting for the simple word, “Go!”

Javelina Athletics hosted the 4th Annual Hoggie Hunt at Javelina Stadium on March 26, 2013.

The Easter egg hunt was open to the community for children 13 years old and younger.

“Last year we had 2,000 eggs, this year we have 4,000, covering the field,” Amanda Knight, assistant AD for academic outreach said.

Knight is also the advisor for the student advisory committee and organized the event with help from the athletes.

“They are happy to help, though sometimes it takes little push to get them into it, but for the most part they have been very, very helpful,” Knight said.

H-E-B, New York Life Insurance Company, Rudy’s Pest Control and TAMUK Crew are among the sponsors of the event who donated prizes, among other things, for the children of the community.

“H-E-B believes in giving back to the community, that’s very dear to our hearts,” Joe Elizondo, H-E-B Kingsville store director said. “As a sponsor we donate monies to the university to hold an event like this, such as the eggs, and the hotdogs.”

Elizondo said his favorite part about an event like this is seeing the children’s smiles as they fill their baskets with eggs.

Head Athletics Trainer Ruben Cantu had a similar sentiment.

“My favorite part is just seeing the kids come together and having a good little time, in a safe environment,” Cantu said. “Now that I’m a parent, safe is important.”

Knight expressed her thanks to the community for being helpful in putting on the event, and making it an enjoyable afternoon for the children of Kingsville.

“I just want to thank everybody for coming out and being helpful,” Knight said.
