The Fun in the Sun Health Expo is scheduled for April 10 between 4 and
8 p.m. and will be held in the dorm area between the Dining Hall and Martin Hall.
“We’re making it easier for the students to get educated about their health,” Kassy Canales, Peer Education Program (PEP Talk) president, said. “We wanted to have the expo in an area where students are at all the time and not make them walk all the way to the boulevard.”
The Fun in the Sun Health Expo is organized by PEP Talk and is a calibration between the Student Health and Wellness Center and Residence Life and is held in the spring semester.
“I want to educate the students of our campus about their health and help them live a healthier life,” Canales said. “We hold the expo closer to the summer so that the students go home and continue to live a healthy lifestyle when not in school.”
Fun in the Sun will feature many organizations from the university and the Kingsville community that can offer health information for the students.
“The event is similar to Fall Carnival and Spring Fling with many different organizations,” Joe Castillo, Peer Educator Coordinator said. “For example, we [Pep Talk]
will be talking about alcohol awareness, our counselors will be talking about mental awareness, and CHAMP (Cultivating HIV/AIDS Awareness Management & Prevention) will be talking about sexual awareness.”
Aside from the alcohol and sexual awareness, the expo will offer students advice on how and when to apply sunscreen when going out during the summer.
“We want to teach students
how to stay healthy while having fun during the summer,” Canales said. “If you go the beach, we want you to know how to keep your skin healthy by applying the right amount of sunscreen.”
PEP Talk offers the students of Texas A&M University-Kingsville education about their health and is part of the Student Health and Wellness Center.
