SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s golf team took third place at the inaugural Fall Cardinal Classic hosted by Incarnate Word at the Olympia Hills Golf Course.
After opening the tournament with a first round score of 345, the Javelinas posted a 355 total on Tuesday in the second and final round. The team’s top finisher, Ashley Coy (Bastrop/Bastrop HS), was the only person on the squad to improve from the first round to the second round as she carded a 85-83-168 to finish in seventh place overall. Twin sisters Ashley and Brandy Rivera (McAllen/McAllen HS) took seventh and ninth place with scores of 84-90=174 and 86-90=176, respectively.
Senior Betsy Haddock (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) was the team’s fourth finisher each day with a 90-92=182 to finish in a tie for 14th place.
Host Incarnate Word won the team title with rounds of 320 and 316 to finish with a 636 total. St. Mary’s was second at 335-329=664 and the Javelinas were third at 345-355=700.
UIW’s Flower Castillo won individual medalist honors after posting a 78-71=149 on the par-72, 5925-yard course. Teammate Joanna De Sa Peirera was second (81-75=156) and Alejandra Cantu of St. Mary’s was third (83-75=158).
The Javelinas are back in action next Monday and Tuesday at the UT-Brownsville Invitational.
