The crown is soon going to be in the hands of another hopeful.
Applications for Miss TAMUK 2015 are currently available, and will be taken up until Feb. 9.
Prospective candidates can attend an informational session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 or from 12 to 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 in room 219A at the Student Union Building for guidance on how to write their applications.
“We’ll cover the process in general, for anyone that wants to apply, and we’ll talk about what Miss TAMUK actually does in her one year,” said Erin McClure, Director of Student Activities and co-chair of Miss TAMUK. “And to students that aren’t sure if they could apply, it’ll help them to see if they really want to apply.”
Scholarships will be awarded to the top three Miss TAMUK contestants. First place will receive $2,000, second place will receive $1,200 and third place will receive $750.
Some of the duties that Miss TAMUK has are to represent the university at local events on and off campus, including being a judge for competitions or appearing at parades, McClure said.
The skills that candidates acquire over the course of the semester are invaluable, McClure said.
“Even in the experience of running, you’re still able to get a lot out of the process, from interviewing and doing community service,” McClure said. “You gain public speaking skills, become better leaders, and gain friendships. They also learn a lot about the university and become more well-rounded people.”
McClure said she and the other committee members are looking forward to what the applicants have to offer.
“We hope to see an eagerness to represent the university and to be an ambassador, and to show spirit and pride,” McClure said.
