Getting a high paying job just got easier and four years at a university isn’t required.
Beginning Feb. 22, the Texas A&M University – Kingsville Center for Continuing Education will have oil and gas training programs available with certification and job placement for anyone seriously interested in working in the trade.
“It’s not an easy job. We want them to be prepared to be on call and to take on many hours,” said Marilu Salazar, executive director of the Center for Continuing Education.
The center is working with ShaleNET, a job-placement program funded through the United States Department of Labor.
According to its website, ShaleNET has helped men and women find work among hundreds of coveted positions involved in the natural gas industry.
Salazar said the program is great for those who are not wanting to attend college because the program offers job placement.
“I understand that some people are not college-bound.This is how we can help them get jobs with higher pay,” Salazar said.
“It’s our main goal to educate the community. We know at this time there are openings in this industry and we have contacts to get them jobs,” she said.
The requirements for enrollment in the program are a high school diploma and applicants have to be 18 years or older.
Salazar said the center already has applicants that will be screened and interviewed before the program begins.
Salazar said the program is for 3 weeks and tuition is $1,500 or $3,000 with a meal plan, room and board.
Since the program will start at a later date, places in the program are still open and the application deadline is not set at this time.
The first program that will be offered is the Roustabout Training, an entry level job that requires assembly or repair of oil field equipment using hand and power tools.
Other programs that are offered through the Center for Continuing Education include Completion Technician, Floorhand training and Welder’s helper.
Certifications include PEC Safeland Basic, Aerial Work Platform, Rough Terrain Forklift, Basic First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Defensive Driving and Basic Rigging.
