It hasn’t been the prettiest of seasons for the Texas A&M Kingsville volleyball team but things seem to fall into place for the young, athletic team.
With some help from the Tarleton State TexAnns dismissing Texas A&M Commerce in five sets, the Javelinas took care of business at home downing the University of Incarnate Word in five sets and earned a Lone Star Conference tournament berth.
“We want to be a team that goes on for post-season play.” Sophomore Lauryn Lozano said. “we are young but we don’t want to be the team that doesn’t qualify for the tournament,”
The Javelinas set a school record with 85 kills as a team and had four players finish with 13 or more kills.
Lozano led the team with 28 kills and a .392 attack percentage while Kelsey Washington had 23 kills, four blocks, four digs and a .319 attack percentage. Bethany Friesenhahn nearly had a triple-double with 15 kills, 20 digs and Lakeshia Craft added 13 kills and a .407 attack percentage.
Also, Sondra Cui had 47 assists and Giselle Carreon had 29 as the team set a school record with 80 assists.
More compelling for the Javelinas may be the fact that they were able to close-out a five set game for just the third time this season as the team was 1-6 in conference five set matches heading into the match and just 2-6 overall.
“It’s good to win and have this momentum late in the season,” Washington said. ”
Sitting at 15-3(7-12) within conference, the Javelinas will meet the TexAnns to close out the season at home.
Tarlatan State sits in fourth place and has already clinched their spot in the tournament.
The game is set to start at 7 p.m. for senior night.
