Calloway relieved of coaching duties

The Javelina football team will be coached under a new regime Saturday when they play Angelo State.

David Calloway has been relieved from his head coaching duties per Javelina Athletics.

Offensive line coach Jaime Martinez, a former Javelina All-American will be the interim head coach till the end of the season with a national search to be conducted immediately.

Martinez is in his 10th season as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

Vice president of intercollegiate athletics and recreation Scott Gines addressed Calloway Monday afternoon on his release and talked to the remaining staff and players on Calloway’s dismissal.

The decision to pick Martinez for interim head coach has to do with Martinez having history with the program Gines said.

“Jaime has great institutional history, and his pedigree and accolades reflect this. I believe in choosing an interim leader you select someone who knows your culture and who has the ability to improvise and make good adaptive decisions.”

Gines said that the competitiveness of the team was a factor in the release of Calloway.

“Being competitive and competing are two different things, and I do not believe that we competed to our fullest capability in recent weeks.”

Gines went on to say that mid-year leadership change is something he doesn’t embrace, but needed to make a statement to get the program on track.

“I do not embrace mid-year leadership changes; however, doing so raises the heat, and raising the heat forces people to adapt and compete,” Gines said. “My aim is to create an environment that intensifies our confidence and competitiveness.”

Calloway ended his head coaching stint with the Javelinas with a 3-13 overall record and failed to register one conference win. Calloway was the defensive coordinator and had been with the program since 2007.

When asked about his time with Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Calloway said “It was an honor and a pleasure.”

The national search will be conducted by Parker Executive Search out of Atlanta.

Gines said he anticipates the search to be conducted by the end of the 2014 calendar year.

“Optimally, before the Holiday Break in December.” Gines said.

Martinez is a former player for the Javelinas playing from 1992-1995. His teams went 21-0 in conference play and 39-13 in his playing career.
