A third set dominating performance by the Lady Javelinas led to a 3-1 victory (25-13, 22-25, 25-10 and 25-19) over the St. Mary’s Rattlers at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on pack the house night in a non-conference match.

The Lady Javelinas used their offensive firepower to out muscle the Rattlers to improve their overall season record to 7-2. The Javelinas as a team started the match in dominating fashion behind the attacking of Kelsey Washington and Ashley Bukowski.

The Javelinas hit .455 on their attack percentage during the first set, the Rattlers rebounded in the second set jumping out to a 6-0 run catching the Javelinas off guard.

Head Coach Tanya Allen said her team has to maintain their offensive power in order to keep up the early season success.

“We are excited, we got some good non-conference wins. That’s always positive,” Allen said. “Hopefully we are improving steadily and at a fast enough rate to where we can compete in this conference.”

The Javelinas took the next two sets in dominating fashion winning by a combined score of 50-29 behind a stellar defensive effort from freshman libiero Brett Zaccardo.

Zaccardo said the key for the team is to remain focused as they head into conference play this weekend.

“I love how we are coming together as a team, with such a new team there are lots of new things to learn,” Zaccardo said. “To prepare we need to work on just getting our offense going, if we stay balanced and keep our energy and our fundamentals straight, we’ll be good.”

The Javelinas open LSC play this weekend when they travel for back to back road games against Tarleton State and Angelo State Sept 19-20.

“We got to focus more on the little things, we had a couple mistakes on easy balls. For conference we can’t have that because other teams capitalize on that.”

The Javelinas return home Sept. 26 for their LSC home opener against Texas A&M University-Commerce.
