Trujillo says goodbye to Javelina Nation

The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelina women’s basketball team qualified for the Lone Star Conference tournament for the first time in five years, finishing sixth in the LSC with their best overall record since 2009.

Despite those accomplishments for the program, it was not enough for now former head coach Michael Trujillo who was released from his position on March 12.

Trujillo leaves the Javelinas after three complete seasons with the team, during his tenure Trujillo amassed a record of 25-54.

This year’s team was the best of the three teams he coached, Trujillo leaves the program after guiding his team to an 11-16 overall record and a 6-10 LSC record.

The Lady Javelinas will have the arsenal to build of this season’s mild success with several key players returning to next year’s squad.

Lindsey Mahone returns to the team after leading the Javelinas with 13.7 points a game. Ashley Viera will be back to run the point guard position and was the second leading scorer for the Javelinas with 11 points per contest.

Lauren Jay returns to the team as the third leading scorer from this season with seven points per contest.

Overall 10 of the 14 Javelinas on this season’s roster will return for next season under the direction of a new head coach

The returning number of players puts the Javelinas in a prime position to compete next season.

Trujillo had this to say on his release and thanked former athletic director Ken Oliver for the opportunity. He also went on to thank the community and the athletes.

“I would like to thank Ken Oliver for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity to become a collegiate head coach. I’d also like to thank all of the people in Javelina Nation that helped me and my family and supported us while we were here in Kingsville,” Trujillo said.

“Finally, thank you to all the student-athletes that dedicated themselves. Their time and their efforts to improving the women’s basketball program.” he added.
