Jaeleen Castro’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh plated Bailey Offill for the winning run as the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team earned their first Lone Star Conference win of the season 8-7 Friday at Hubert Field.
The Javelinas, who snapped a 13-game losing streak with the win moved to 11-24 on the season and are 1-11 in the LSC. Abilene Christian fell to 21-17 overall and 5-7 in the league.
After ACU jumped to a 6-0 lead after an inning in a half with five runs off Katrisha Arocha in the second, the Javelinas chipped their way back into the game.
Kingsville cut their deficit to four in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back doubles by Kodie Garner and Bailey Offill opened the inning with Garner plating on Offill’s two-bagger.
With two away, Rose Stubbs tripled to make it a 6-2 game.
Adela Gomez, who posted her second-straight game with two home runs, hit a solo shot in the third pulling the hosts to within 6-3.
Stubbs added an RBI double to center in the fourth to make it a 2-run game, 6-4.
After a sacrifice fly by Keanna Winfield made it a 7-4 game in the top of the sixth, Gomez tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Offill walked to start the inning, while Castro was hit by a pitch with two outs.
Gomez followed blasting a 3-run home run to left to knot the game at seven.
After stealing second, Offill advanced to third as Stubbs reached on a fielder’s choice with Garner out at home setting up Castro’s game winning single.
Denise Arnold earned the win moving to 6-12 on the year.
Annold pitched 5-2/3 innings in
relief of Arocha scattering three hits, walking three and striking out four. She permitted just one earned run.
Gomez led the Javelinas with three hits as they had 10 as a team. Stubbs and Denney each had two hits, while Offill scored three runs.
Kingsville is off until traveling to Lawton, Okla. for a LSC series at Cameron next Friday and Saturday.
