Texas A&M-Kingsville pitcher Dallas Ponder and first baseman Taylor Taska were chosen the Lone Star Conference co-Pitcher of the Week and co-Hitter of the Week in baseball the league office announced on Tuesday.
Ponder, a junior from Flatonia, shared the weekly pitching with Incarnate Word’s Alexis Garza. Ponder picked up the win for Kingsville in the season opening win over fourth-ranked Central Missouri. He tossed six innings of two-hit baseball allowing one run on a solo home run. The junior struck out seven batters and walked two as the Mules hit just .100 in the game.
Taska led the Javelinas at the plate and also earned a win on the mound in the tournament finale. Taska hit for a .474 average. He also paced the team with four doubles, 4 RBI, 6 runs scored and had one of two home runs on the weekend. Taska warmed up in the final two games of the weekend including a 4-for-6 performance with three doubles, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored against Arkansas-Monticello in a 16-9 win. He was 3-for-5 in the finale against Abilene Christian with a run scored and a steal.
The junior also pitched 3-1/3 innings against ACU to get the win allowing one earned run, four hits and fanning two.
The Javelinas return home to host the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach South Texas Baseball Classic at Whataburger Field. The games are at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Kingsville will play the late game each day.
