Javelina Baseball Picked To Finish Second In Lone Star Conference

The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team was selected to finish second by Angelo State and had one nod for the top spot in the 2013 Lone Star Conference Preseason poll released by the league office on Thursday. The poll was selected by head coaches, sports information staff and LSC media.

The Javelinas, who posted a 31-18 record overall and were second in the LSC with an 18-10 mark, finished one point in front of Tarleton State with 113 points and three in front of Incarnate Word. West Texas A&M was ranked fifth with 98 points, followed by Abilene Christian sixth (87). Cameron had 44 points for seventh, while Eastern New Mexico rounded out the poll with 25.

The overall LSC champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games. The winner of the postseason tournament will be recognized as LSC tournament champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into the NCAA postseason. The championship will be played May 3-6, in Canyon, Texas as part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.

Voters also selected the LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year.

Angelo’s Lee Neumann was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year. The senior outfielder, who was the co-LSC Player of the Year last season, finished 2012 with a .389 batting average, and led the league in hits (81), triples (9), slugging percentage (.668) and total bases (139). The outfielder also drove in 45 runs, scored 60 and stole 17 bases.

Tarleton State’s Pete Perez was tabbed the top hurler in the LSC. The LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year posted an 8-3 record and league-best 2.06 ERA, .194 opposing batting average, 91.2 innings pitched, seven complete games and five shutouts as a junior a year ago.

The Javelinas open the 2013 season next Friday at the Astros in Action Division II against Central Missouri.
