Senior duo Kaitlyn Lowen and Breanna Gonzalez led the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team to a 61-59 victory over New Mexico Highlands during the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic finale Saturday at Hampton Inn Court.
In the first half, Lowen played well on offense for the Javelinas hitting six points and only allowing one turnover.
However, she got into foul trouble at the two-minute mark, and was charged a technical foul for her comments to the referee after a personal foul.
Again, Lowen led the team with 11 total points and recorded two steals defensively.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle for the Javelinas (2-2). The Cowgirls (3-4) took a three-point lead with several steals by NMHU post Kate Cryderman and a 5-0 run.
From there, the Javelinas took over holding the Cowgirls to just 10 points in the last five minutes of the game.
Defensively, Gonzalez played hardball causing several turnovers and recording three steals, tying her career high. She also played well on the other side of the ball, scoring 10 points and had career-high five assists.
Gonzalez was named the MVP on the all-tournament team
for this weekend.
Posts Brandi Clark and Ashley Benavides joined the two seniors with double-digits: 10 points each. Benavides also recorded a career-high three steals for the game and Clark had a career-high of four assists.
The women are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 28, as they host their first Lone Star Conference game against Cameron on the
Kingsville Hampton Inn Court at 6 p.m.
