For the third time in the program’s history, and the first time since 2008 the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team has been invited to the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament that will be hosted by Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO.
Even with AMK losing both games in the Lone Star Conference two weeks ago they only dropped to fifth in the regional standings, which was still good enough, to earn them a bid into the regional tournament as the top six teams in the region make the tournament.
“If you look at our body of work through the season, you see a team who deserves to be there,” said head coach Jason Gonzales
The tournament will start this Thursday, May 17 and will run through Sunday May 20, this is a double elimination tournamant. The Javelinas (31-16) enter the bracket as the fifth seed. Central Missouri is St. Mary’s follows the top seed and them, and fellow LSC rival Angelo State, Southern Arkansas, AMK and St. Edward’s.
The Javelinas kick off the tournament when they play the opening game of the tournament on Thursday at 11 a.m. against the St. Mary’s Rattlers. The Hogs and Rattlers have already played twice this season with each team winning a game. The Javelinas won 10-1 in Kingsville while the Rattlers won 10-0 in San Antonio. Coach Gonzales said, “ We know their style of play and we know what we need to do to beat them.”
The Rattlers enter the tournament ranked #2 in the latest national poll and they won both the Heartland Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Rattlers will have to deal with Javelina senior pitcher Jaden Dillon, LSC Pitcher of the Year as AMK will send him to the mound.
Coach Gonzales also said “We like our chances and we like our match-ups.”
Including the Rattlers the Javelinas have played three of the other teams in the tournament. They swept a pair of games from St. Edward’s and split a four game series with Angelo State.
