Last weekend was a big one for the Lone Star Conference as two players were picked up during the draft and four more being signed as undrafted free agents thus far.
Midwestern State was the gem of the conference having their offensive tackle Amini Silatolu drafted early in the second round by the Carolina Panthers. Silatolu graded out with an 83.7 and was rated on many boards as the third best tackle available. Silatolu’s draft popularity rose because of his size and quickness and his ability to punish defenders with crushing blocks.
“Silatolu is a good football player, my beast from Midwestern State. He’s tough, nasty, a finisher. He’s a little bit raw. He’s a gifted player, but he’s raw. But I’m telling you right now that he’s a starting guard with Pro Bowl potential. This is a good move by Carolina.” Said draft expert Mike Mayock.
Another LSC draftee was Abilene Christian running back Daryl Richardson. Richardson was drafted at pick 45 in the seventh round by the Rams. Richardson finished last season with 867 yards and 11 rushing and three receiving touchdowns.
Bucky Brooks’ take on the rams pick:
“The Rams pick up a small-school standout to potentially alleviate some of the pressure off Steven Jackson in the running game. Richardson has displayed potential as a runner, but will need to really step up his game to earn significant carries in St. Louis.”
