Golf team falls short at LSC conference championship

Last week the Women’s golf team fired an opening round at 347 at the 2012 Firestone Lone Star Conference Championship hosted by the Trophy Club Country

Ashley Coy has been a leader for the women’s golf team all season long including LSC Championship

Club.

The Lady Javelinas were among 7 other teams competing in the annual league event. Playing on the Whitworth course under perfect weather conditions the Javelinas had three players shoot 86 or better.

Head coach Alessandra Dominguez says “They are a great group of girls. I was very happy with their attitude on the golf course and I can see the potential for improvement the next year.”

Freshmen Ashley Coy led the way with an 82 and tied for 23rd at the end of the first round.

In the end Coy tied for 31st with Ashley Rivera with a score of 166. Brandy Rivera placed 34th with a score of 171. Elizabeth Haddock placed 39th with a 188 and Victoria Alderete placed 40th with a score of 202.

The team had a score of 347 at the end of the first round and a 344 at the end of the second creating an overall score of 691 placing the team in 8th place.

“We improved in comparison to last years’ scores, but we could have been better. They struggled a lot with the short game”, says Dominguez. “During practice we will be playing more holes instead of doing drills and hitting balls. While playing more they will put themselves in different situations and would need to be creative with the different shots.” Dominguez believes that this will make a big difference in the teams scores next year.
