Approximately 19 million STD infections are reported each year. Over half of those cases reported pertain to the 15 to 24 age group. Some STDS affect women far more severely than men, according to epigee.org.
Texas A&M Kingsville’s (AMK) Health and Wellness Center is hosting their Women for Women Conference, an all-girls event that invites them to have fun and learn about various sexual health issues.
“The purpose of the event is to educate and empower women to take charge of their sexual health; to increase awareness of STDs and HIV and introduce skills to help communicate wants and needs in a relationship,” said Dianne Brown, Director of Student Health and Wellness.
The retreat will be held at the Memorial Student Union Building on the 2nd floor. It will begin at 3:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
The different types of activities range from a MAC makeup presentation, jewelry shopping, mini manicures, massages, and a presentation on nutrition. There will also be $1500 in prizes and dinner.
“Women will be able to get increased knowledge about their bodies, and will be able to use assertive communication skills to say what they want and mean what they say,” Brown said.
