Day without shoes enter third year at AMK in efforts to raise awareness efforts raise awareness

Today marks another year  Texas A&M University – Kingsville “Is Going Without Shoes So Kids Don’t Have To”.
The 3rd Annual One Day Without Shoes Walk will be held on University Blvd. which begins at 5:30 P.M and ends at 8:30 P.M.
This day is part of a national campaign to draw awareness to the amount of children across the globe that do not have shoes.
Millions of children live without shoes today.
Many are exposed to injury and disease each day, and at most schools, children are required to wear shoes.
Shoes can help protect against injury, and in combination with basic hygiene and sanitation, help prevent disease and soil-transmitted infections.
A few examples are Podoconiosis, which is a debilitating and disfiguring soil-based disease, Hookworm, which can cause intestinal pain, weakness and cognitive impairment, and jiggers which are burrowing fleas that cause painful infections once in the skin.
When Shoes are combined with tragic interventions, they become a powerful tool to help keep kids healthy and in school.
This event is sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a company that donates one pair of shoes to children in need for every pair purchased.
Last year, people went without shoes at over 1,000 events in over 25 countries around the globe.
“The university is encouraged to join in the barefoot walk”, says Genesis Urbina, an A&M- Kingsville graduate student and event organizer. “While all are going barefoot on April 10th, we must all remember that it is one thing to go without shoes for one day and it’s another to go without shoes your entire life”.
During this life changing event there will be a musical appearance by local artist Mathias Isassi.
The Javelina Students for Sustainability at TAMUK will sponsor this event.
Also, bottled water will be provided for those who attend. For more information contact Genesis at (361) 406- 7600.
