KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The 2012 Spring
Football season came to a conclusion on Thursday night for Texas
A&M-Kingsville inside Javelina Stadium with the second half of their annual
Spring Game. The Blue team defeated the
White team 43-29 after taking a 27-6 halftime lead.
The first half of the Spring Game was
played on Saturday. The top players for
the Blue in the first half were wide receiver Clyde Lee, running back Anthony
Johnson and linebacker Justin Young. Lee
had five catches for 95 yards and scored a touchdown. Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 67 yards
and two scores. Young led a spirited
defensive effort with three sacks and three forced fumbles.
The White team was unable to get much
going on Saturday. Running back Randall
Toney had a solid performance with seven carries for 50 yards while defensive
back James Gilbert picked off two passes.
On Thursday night, the White team
dominated possession. They picked up 20
first downs and accumulated 304 yards of offense. Toney picked up 66 more yards on the ground
on 10 carries and had two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dean Brantley had an outstanding
half going 15-of-24 for 148 yards and two touchdowns after a tough first half. Tight end Chandler Hill led the receiving
corp with five catches for 56 yards while Robert Armstrong had four catches for
22 yards and a touchdown.
The White defense was led by Gilbert
who had six tackles on the night and Cliff Baker who picked off a pass in the
The Blue offense received strong play
from a pair of quarterbacks. Bryan
Ehrlich went 6-of-9 for 116 yards, a touchdown and an interception while Aaron
Bueno rushed for 46 yards on three carries and scored a touchdown. Bueno tossed a touchdown pass on Saturday as
well. Ehrlich connected with Shane
Prater and Sherman Batiste on 43-yard bombs with Batiste’s ending in the end
The Blue defense was led by Anthony
Forker who made 12 tackles and broke up a pass in one half of play.
The Javelinas open the regular season on
September 1 at home against Central Washington.
