Drawing the No. 7 team in the nation did not pan out how the Texas A&M Kingsville men’s basketball team had hoped Wednesday afternoon as the Tarleton State Texans ousted the Javelinas, 67-55 en-route to a Lone Star Conference championship.
The Javelinas (12-15, 7-11) closed out the regular season by winning four of their final six games to earn the seventh seed in the conference tournament.
One of the biggest keys for the team this year has been getting to the free throw line while driving the lane.
When the Hogs made more free throws than their opponents they were 10-3 on the season and they are 2-11 when the reverse is true.
Ashton Brown, the nations best free throw shooter, did not get to the line in the first-round loss.
Brown led the team with 14.5 points and 3.0 assists per game while leading the nation in free throw percentage (96.1%).
For most of the season the Javelinas relied upon Brown and Robert Williams to provide the scoring,Williams puts in 14.2 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.
Both Brown and Williams were named to the All-LSC honorable mention squad.
The Hogs will return the entire roster with the exception of Williams and Marcus Ford, who set the all-time career blocks record with 69.
