On Dec. 27, 2011, Former Texas A&M-Kingsville student Irma Salinas was driving back to Laredo on Dec. 27 after spending the holiday in her hometown of Eagle Pass.
A tire on her SUV apparently popped, causing her to lose control of her vehicle.  She was ejected from the SUV, causing fatal injuries according to law enforcement reports.
Salinas, 23, was five months pregnant according to AMK student  Ricky Rodriguez, her boyfirend of several years.
On Wednesday Feb. 22, Greek Life presented the Casino Night: Bingo and Poker Benefit to contribute donations to help cover expenses for the memorial services for Salinas. In a show of solidarity, the AMK Inner Fraternity Council organized the  event without Rodriguez’s knowledge, according to Erin McClure, AMK Greek advisor.
“All the fraternities contributed to the event by attending, giving some of their time and donating to help pay some of the expenses for the funeral,”  McClure said.
Rodriguez she was very grateful.
“It was unexpected surprise. When I heard of the news I wanted to burst into tears,” Rodriguez said. “It was great to know that people whom I did not know wanted to reach out and help.”
A tribute video of Salinas’ life was presented. The organizers had  a moment of silence to honor Salinas’s death.
“She will not be forgotten any time soon, we can only hope for her to rest in peace, and to keep going on with our lives and become someone, because that is what she would have wanted,” said Rodriguez, who dated Salinas for seven years.
