It was all smiles for the Texas A&M –Kingsville women’s basketball team, as they were able to pull off and impressive win against Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State as the Lady Javelinas beat the Ram Belles 65-54.

Going into the game the Lady Javelinas were looking for a couple of things, one revenge against Angelo State, who last time they played each other AMK got embarrassed losing by twenty to the Ram Belles and also to get a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

To start the game the Lady Javelinas were able to come out strong in the first half to match the intensity of Angelo State, both teams came out strong on the defensive end which made for a low scoring half as both teams shot around 36 percent from the floor in the first half, “Both our teams (AMK & Angelo State) just couldn’t get the shots to fall” said head coach Michael Trujillo, but the Lady Javelinas were able to take the lead going into the half with a score of 27-25 thanks to 13 Angelo State turnovers in the first half.

The Lady Javelinas came out of the half focused as they were play on both sides of the ball to go on a 8-2 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a sizeable 11 point lead.

That would be how the rest of the game would go for the Lady Javelinas, as they were able to control the tempo for majority of the second half.

Late in the second half the Lady Javelinas started to get careless with the ball they let the Ram Belles come to within two with just under two minutes left in the game, but thanks to a big three point shot by Kelly Bastow late in the game that was able to reenergize the Lady Javelinas as they were able to finish the game on a 9-0 run to finish off the Ram Belles beating them 65-54.

Coach Trujillo said, “We feed off that shot and it was able to give us the energy we needed to finish the game.”
