Javelina For Life is more than school pride

From the moment students enroll at Texas A&M University – Kingsville (AMK), they become part of the Javelina tradition that dates back to 1935 and continues long into the future.
During the 2011-fall semester, AMK’s Office of Alumni & Development introduced the “Javelina for Life” campaign as a way to educate the Javelina community about the importance of staying connected, giving back and endorsing the university.
Since then, over 600 students, faculty and alumni have pledged to become a “Javelina for Life,” among them Dr. Steve Tallant, president of the university.
“A ‘Javelina for Life’ is a diehard Javelina fan and supporter of the university,” said Paige de Vaudrecourt, Annual Giving Program Coordinator.
“Show your Javelina pride by joining President Tallant and taking the pledge to be a Javelina online at jfl.tamuk.edu, or even liking ‘Javelina for Life’ on Facebook and Twitter.”
“By taking the pledge, students show support for the university, encourage younger generations to receive a Javelina education and after graduating you, (the student) will still be connected with school events and programs information,” said de Vaudrecourt.
The majority of the undergraduates need financial assistance.
“By being a student needing and receiving help, it can encourage students to help others in need,” said de Vaudrecourt.
“We want to build a culture of philanthropy at TAMUK that encourages Javelinas to help one another and their community.”
The “Javelina for Life” program will be collaborating with the Coastal Bend Blood Center on Feb. 20, from 11am – 4pm with their first blood drive in front of the Javelina Dining hall.
“Participating in the big events like helping to beautify our community or by donating blood to the Coastal Bend Blood Center to save a life are among the many ways to contribute,” said de Vaudrecourt.
“We would like our students to get involved and show them that giving back is not all about how much money you can donate, for there are multiple ways people can give back.”
