Opening day is a happy one for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team as they were able to open up the season with a win by beat the visiting Hill Toppers of St. Edwards to a score of 5-3.
Javelinas sent starting pitcher Jaden Dillon to mound to start the game and Hilltoppers started pitcher Jeff Rohrbach each breezed through the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third the Javelinas the Javelinas had their first scoring threat when Trent Wagner led off with a triple, but the hog were unable to bring him around to score.
The Hilltoppers were able to jump on top of the Javelinas in the top of fourth thanks to Ransom LaLonde who laid down a squeeze bunt bringing in the runner from third and taking a small 1-0 lead, the bunt was then followed up by a two run home run by Marshall Burford giving the Hilltoppers a quick 3-0 lead.
The score stayed the same up until the bottom of the fifth when the Hill Toppers brought in Brad Nasis to pitch. He walked the first batter he faced and then Ben Villafuerte smacked a one-out double to put runners on second and third.Cameron Dullnig followed with a two-run single just inside the first base line.
The Javelinas took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to James Black who tied the game with a one-out double and later scored when the catcher tried to pick him off third base.
In the eighth, the Javelinas tacked on another run when they brought in Dustin Aguilar to pinch run for Jake Mendiola. Aguliar stole second, advanced to third on a Nasis passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Adam Aspaas picked up the win for the Javelinas tossing 4.2 of 1-hit ball while striking out three and not allowing a single walk. Dillon gave up four hits and three runs while walking one and striking out five in 4.1 innings.Cameron Dullnig lead the way for the Javelinas as he picked up two RBI’s on one hit. Overall the Javelinas had five hits for the game.
Nasis was tagged with the loss for the HIlltoppers. Rohrbach went four innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four.
The Javelinas start the season (1-0) and are back in action on Friday at home in a doubleheader against UH-Victoria staring at 3 p.m.
