Winning games when they matter the most seems to be the theme for the Texas A&M Kingsville Lady Javelina Basketball ball team as of late, as AMK has won three out of their last five games including a slim 75-72 win over Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M Commerce earlier today.
The Lady Javelina came in to this game fighting to get the eighth and final spot in the conference for the LSC tournament following the regular season and the Lady Javelina are in a must win situation in every game for the remainder of the season .
The Javelinas started the game on fire after falling down 4-0 to start the game went on a ten to zero run and after that the Javelinas never looked backed as they were able to control the tempo of the game and never lost the lead the Lady Javelinas were able to increase their lead to nine mid-way through the first half, and thanks to 15 Commerce turnovers the Javelinas were able to run the floor in the first half as they were able to take a modest six point lead in to the half with a score of 32-26.

The second half started off just like the first half ended with the Javelinas being able to convert A&M Commerce turnovers and missed shots into easy points and just a few minutes into the second half the Lady Javelinas were able to turn that six point lead in to a sizable 14 point lead.
With just over three minutes left in the game the Javelinas looked to have a firm grasp on the game as they had 12 point lead but the Lady Lions of A&M Commerce wouldn’t go down without fight as they were able to claw their way back into the game with tough defense and poor shooting on the half of the Javelinas.
What was once a ten point lead with just over a minute left turned into a slim five point lead and thanks to two clutch Commerce free throws the Javelinas were holding on to a small three point lead with 15 seconds left and thanks to a miscue on the Javelinas last possession the Lions got the final chance to tie the game with a late three but were not able to capitalize as the shot missed off the backboard as the Javelinas were able to hold on to the slim three point 75-72 win.
“Happy we pulled the win out, but I am disappointed on how we played down the stretch” that’s what head coach Michael Trujillo had to say about the game and the close ending that shouldn’t have been also coach mentioned that we have to play smarter and harder late in games.
For the Javelinas they were led by Shonta Dobbins who had 21 points on the game shooting 3-7 from beyond the arc and also contributing snagging three steals also leading the Javelinas was Amanda Haven who had 20 points to go along with four steals. Even with the Lions grabbing 23 offensive rebounds the Javelinas were able to rely on tough defense to secure a slim win.
With the win the Javelinas increase their record to (5-15, 4-10) and keeping their post season hopes alive. The Lady Javelinas will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Commerce to play this very same Lions team, it’s a must for the Javelinas as the fight for post season play continues.
