There’s something to celebrate for the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelina Women’s basketball team as they were able to break their streak of ten straight losses after knocking off conference rival Abilene Christian 78-72 to pick up their second win of the season and their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Javelinas started off the game strong going shot for shot with the Wildcats, building up an eleven point lead halfway through the first half. Unfortunately, the Wildcats came roaring back as they took a 42-41 lead with two seconds left, but the Javelinas would actually take momentum and the lead in to the locker room for halftime thanks to Amanda Haven and her three pointer at the buzzer to give the Javelinas a 44-42 lead at the break.
The Lady Javelinas were able to start the second half the same way they started the first half, by playing strong defense and making their shots. The Javelinas were able to establish and maintain the lead through out the whole second half despite Abilene Christian making strong runs and cutting in to the lead. The Javelinas would prevail from the game with a 78-72 win.
“We were able to play strong for the full forty minutes and it showed what we are capable of doing,” said Coach Michael Trujillo, talking about what the win meant and how his team played during the game.
The Lady Javelinas were able to shoot 45 percent from the floor and were able to force 28 Wildcat turnovers. The Javelinas were led in scoring by Inekka Stevenson who had 18 points for the game and Jackie Stanley with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, the Javelinas had five players in double figures including Amanda Haven who chipped in with 12 points and also able to snatch four steals.
With the win the Javelinas move their record to 2-11 (1-6) for the season. The Lady Javelinas will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Denton to play Texas Women’s.
