As the Memorial Student Union Building was set to commemorate the guests. Student Regent, Stephanie Martinez, stopped by at Texas A&M Kingsville this past Oct. 14 for the Tejano Heritage Banquet. A Student Regent is appointed in every university or university system. The role of the Student Regent is to help students and the university.
Martinez was one of the honored guests who attended the banquet held at the Memorial Student Union Building at noon. During the banquet, she was often referred to as “The next president of the university” because that is her goal for the future.
Stephanie Martinez was appointed Student Regent of the Texas A&M University system and has been working to help other students ever since. Her main goal is to connect the universities close by in a “sisterhood”. She believes that if a university is facing an issue, other campuses should be able to help out.
Martinez is currently enrolled in Texas A&M International University where she is pursuing her Master’s degree in Communications. She thinks that being a student helps her better understand the necessities of other students. When asked about her role in the Board of Regents she said “These men and women are very experienced but they went to school time ago, and that is the freshness I bring to the board and it’s a huge honor because I’m a student as well”.
The quality of education, financial aid and open carry laws are some of the main issues Martinez often discusses. She visits other A&M campuses around the area where she speaks to students, staff, student organizations and many others to obtain information on anything they might need. She has shown she is a very active student and a leader throughout her college years. She was part of the Student Government for her four undergraduate years, she has participated in many organizations in college and has a student engagement position at Laredo where she is in charge of events around campus. “There’s only one student every year and that is a huge honor to have” said Martinez, who is constantly motivating other hardworking individuals to apply for the Regent position for next year.
Martinez often talks about the importance of vision and imagination. She believes that everyone is capable of achieving great things and that is why she asks students about any ideas they may have that will allow them to acquire skills that will help them in the future. “You could have the next U.S. President sitting next to you in class and to me that is amazing” Martinez said.
