Male students and staff of Texas A&M University- Kingsville gathered this past Wednesday to walk a mile in women’s shoes for a good cause. The annual “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” raises awareness to stop rape, sexual assult, and gender violence.
The event was sponsered by PEP Talk, Student Government Association, and Women’s Enrichment Program. Created in 2001 by Frank Baird, what began as a small group of men walking around parks in women’s shoes became a worldwide phenomenon, with millions of men rasing money to donate to their local domestic violence centers and remediation programs.
The mission is to help men better understand a woman’s every day life, as well as improve relationships between both genders. For every two minutes that pass by, someone in America has been raped. 1 in 6 women falls victim to sexual assault in their lifetime.
These women could be somebody you know and care about. The event may be named on behalf of women, but the organization stands for the rights of all men and women who have been victims. If you or anyone you may know has been assaulted: report it. You don’t have to live in silence.
