Jones Auditorium will be filled of South Texas middle school and high school music students April 1-2 for the 49th Annual Texas A&M University-Kingsville Jazz Festival and competition.
Nationally-renowned guest artist will be Dan Miller will perform and advise during this festival.
The concerts are the highlight of the two-day event. The event will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m., to 7 p.m. at Jones Auditorium, with a free Jazz Clinic with Miller at noon in the Music Building Recital Hall.
Miller has performed with the Harry Conncick Jr. Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis and Tom Jones. He will conduct jazz clinics for the middle school and high school students for this two-day stay at A&M-Kingsville.
The festival will feature performances by university ensembles such as the Jazz Band I, Jazz Band II, Jazz Band III and the Latin Jazz Ensemble. Miller will do a special performance with Jazz Band I.
Miller, born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1969. He began playing trumpet in grade school with the encouragement of his father. Miller grew up in Chicago during the 1980s. He attended the University of North Texas and moved to New York City in 1991.
Miller studied and performed with Don Jacoby, Bobby Shew, John Haynie, Ed Treutel, Brad Goode, and Barry Harris. He spent 11 years as a member of the Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra, touring the world and recording albums and television specials. He is currently a member of the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra. Miller is a Yamaha Clinician and Performing Artist along with working with college bands, high school bands, and private students nationwide. Miller is an Artist-in-Residence for the University of Central Florida’s School of Music in Orlando.
On Friday, April 1, middle school jazz band competitions begin at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Jones Auditorium with a Jazz Band III and Latin Jazz Ensemble Concert.
The competition will end with middle school jazz band competitions awards starting at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, April 2, high school jazz band competitions begin at 8 a.m.-6 p.m. with a concert featuring Jazz Band II and Jazz Band I with Miller at Jones Auditorium. At noon the Jazz Clinic with Miller is set at the Music Building Recital Hall. The high school jazz band competition awards will begin at 7 p.m.
