The men’s basketball team of Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-11, 1-8 LSC) fell to the West Texas A&M Buffaloes 75-62, on Saturday, February 6th from Hampton Inn Court at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas fell into a six point hole early, as David Chavlovich of the Buffaloes, nailed two straight three-pointers to begin the game. He would eventually lead both teams in scoring with 24.
The lead would stay persistent for a majority of the first half, until a late burst by the Javelinas allowed them to close the half on a 7-0 run, capped by a buzzer beating three by Cris Boleware.
In the first half, the Javelinas shot only 33% from the field, however their defense forced 10 turnovers for the second straight game in one half.
Troy Jones was the only player in double figures for the blue and gold at the break, as the bench was held scoreless after the first twenty minutes of play.
The Javelinas would begin the second half drawing close to the Buffaloes, as DJ Weathers and Troy Jones would do most of the scoring for the Hogs slashing the lead to two within the first four minutes.
However, West Texas would catch fire behind a 59% shooting second half, that would allow them to the keep the lead for the entire game, and ultimately squash any chance the Javelinas would have of mounting a comeback.
West Texas walked away victorious against the Hoggies, all while the Buffs lost in the turnover battle (18-9), second chance points (11-17), and points off turnovers (3-16).
The Javelinas had no offensive production from the bench, as the reserves had a goose egg in the points column compared to the 41 provided by the West Texas bench in opposition, lead by Jordan Evans’ 21.
DJ Weathers scored 22 points and had four rebounds with a steal.
Troy Jones followed suit with 18 points and 8 boards, five of which came on the offensive side of the court.
Cris Boleware added 10 while dishing six of the team’s only 8 assists.
The Hogs still find themselves with only one win in the Lone Star Conference up to this point in the season.
The Javelinas will be facing the A&M-Commerce Lions on Feb. 10, at 7:30 P.M. (Updates to be posted online), and in Stephenville on Saturday, February 13th, at 7:00 P.M., against the Tarleton State Texans.
