The Javelinas were picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference in a preseason poll. They are gunning for their third straight Lone Star Conference Championship.
Coach Jason Gonzales’ tam has many familiar faces back, including outfielder Brayton Carlson who hit for .323 last season and led the team in stolen bases and pitcher Trey Taylor who posted a 4.72 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched in 2015. Other returners include utility man Hayden Vesely, who led the tea
m in walks with 36, and senior middle infielder Wesley Aguilar.
Coach Gonzales has also brought in some offense via junior college transfers to fill in the gaps left by last year’s graduating seniors. Third baseman Payton Geisinger, a transfer from Cedar Valley Junior College played in all 45 of the Suns’ games leading the team in hits with 57, runs with 31, and in stolen bases with 11. FromBlinn College, sophomore Hunter Lehman will be backing up the backups. He played 24 games for the Buccaneers, batting .242.The Freshmen class includes a trio of All-Galveston County teammates from Santa Fe High School, shortstop Timothy Johnson, first baseman Jordan Gunter and the left-handed pitcher Preston PlovanichThe Javelinas have their work cut out for them as they face the first of many Heartland Conference opponents this season in Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles finished fifth in the Heartland Conference with a 14-13 record, but as a provisional school they were not eligible for Conference postseason play. Instead they competed in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association, where they reached the NCCAA World Series Semifinal.
It is a three-game series with the first game on Friday at 6 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m with the second game following short after.
