I used to hate social media. For years I refused to create a Facebook. I boycotted twitter. But now, unfortunately, I’m displeased to announce that I have become crazy obsessed, addicted to social media.
My drug of choice?- the ever powerful Instagram. The silly photo-sharing app that requires you to turn perfectly good photos into odd overly- filtered little squares.
The app that encourages us to share small, very well thought- out bits of our lives for the judging pleasure of any person with internet access. And why?
It leads me to question myself and my morals. Have we become so obsessed with the validation from strangers and online friends that we’ve forgotten what it is to be content with ourselves?
When did our opinion of ourselves take a backseat to the opinion of others? My parent’s have always drilled into my brain, “Who cares what anyone thinks,” and that has become my mantra.
It’s 2015 and we have officially reached an age where we get to live twice- we get a real life, and what I call an “Instagram life”. Instagram life meaning the persona we create for ourselves online.
The person who is flawlessly beautiful, who has the best friends, takes the perfect pictures. The person who lives a seemingly perfect existence.
That’s the problem. In our social media lives we’re too focused on making it look like we are better than everyone else. Let’s all make a promise to make ourselves happy- with or without social media.
At the end of the day we all have to realize, Instagram is pretend. At some point we have to make a decision.
Do we attempt to live an Instagram life, one where we’re obsessed with approval, one in which we pretend to be satisfied, or do we put the phone down and make ourselves happy?
We need to cut back on the time spent browsing timelines and enjoy the life that’s happening around us. You can’t put a filter on real life.
For my last college semester I’ve decided to challenge myself. I’m cutting back on screen time and encourage everyone else to do the same. You might hate it, you might love it.
Life is all about balance. Find what works for you. Regardless, live a life, real and Instagram that you can be proud of.
